Black Oystercatcher’s creamy mussel soup and White Pearl, a dreamy combination

That creamy mussel soup and Black Oystercatcher's 2011 White Pearl.

In the Strandveld where you find South Africa’s southernmost vineyards and boutique wine producers, there’s a farmer and winemaker called Dirk Human who does his magic in the cellar of Moddervlei Farm where Black Oystercatcher wines are created. I’ve had the privilege, many years ago, to spend a weekend with him and some other boutique winemakers in that area and … well, shall we say, it’s still fondly remembered!

Portugal and South Africa are strongly linked both through history and a mutual passion for food and wine. To celebrate this connection, Kyknet Kokkedoor judge and long-time chef Nic van Wyk has develop Portuguese recipes with a distinct South African twist; recipes which complement the renowned range of Portuguese varietals from the Swartland's oldest wine estate, Allesverloren.

Pairing riesling: the forgotten, yet perfect food wine!

Riesling is a superb food wine.

I find it funny that Riesling is always hailed as one of the greatest (if the not the greatest) white wine varieties and yet so few people have it in their cellars or use it at the dinner table, writes Eric Guido from the USA. Honestly, it’s a shame. The fact is, Riesling is one of the best food-combining wines. Not just because of its mouthwatering acidity or intense fruit, but because it comes in so many varying degrees of sweetness that you can almost always find a Riesling that will go with your meal.
