Why we all should still drink wine in Drynuary!

Yes, we love wine!

You may not always be in the mood for wine talk, especially after a long, indulgence-drenched holiday season, writes Claudia Angelillo. Many of us have taken the “Drynuary” pledge (a personal promise to avoid alcohol consumption during the month of January) only to fail miserably within the first week. Sound familiar? If yes, you are in good company.

Top 10 wine faux pas

The "holy cows" of wine are slaughtered!

The world of wine needn’t be an intimidating gauntlet of unexplainable terms and stuffy etiquette, but being aware of some common pitfalls can’t hurt, writes Lauren Eads.

Society is awash with perceived expectations and etiquette when it comes to drinking wine, many of which are wholly off the mark.

Top 10 most irritating wine terms

A bible for wine terms?

The wine world offers a rich tapestry of styles and personalities to excite the most jaded gastronome. However, as a random sample of tasting notes or back labels will show, the vocabulary used to describe this remarkable spectrum can be remarkably ineffectual and at times downright irritating, writes Gabriel Stone.

WYN VAN DIE WEEK: Stellenbosch Vineyards Credo Chenin Blanc 2010

Stellenbosch Vineyards se Credo Chenin Blanc 2010.

En so kom nog ’n jaar tot ’n einde! Dit was ’n jaar vol kos- en wyn-ervarings, nóg ’n been op my persoonlike wynreis van ontdekking.

Miskien volgende jaar.

WINE OF THE WEEK: Cape Rock GRV 2012

Cape Rock GRV 2012 with a West Coast Platter, YUMMIE!

At last the “silly season” in the wine industry, that’s the one where food and wine dominate the lives of us very fortunate and blessed few and last for about 11 months, is winding down and I had my last wine and food function for the year. Now it’s time to get this old wreck of a body in some sort of a shape for the “swimwear season”. I really don’t want to embarress my family and friends unneccesarily ... if I don’t have to!

But before it’s the final farewell for the year, let’s have a look at which wines dazzled the senses this past week and which one stood out in the crowd.

WYN VAN DIE WEEK: Baleia Bay Chardonnay 2013 & Babylonstoren Chardonnay 2012

WINE OF THE WEEK: Ayama Baboon’s Swing Chenin Blanc 2013

baboon's swing chenin blanc.jpg

This week’s column kicks off with some excellent medical advice from a certain Dr Phillip Norrie: “Consuming wine in moderation daily will help people to die young as late as possible!” He adds: “Wine is the thinking person’s health drink.”

WYN VAN DIE WEEK: Avondale Navitas 2008

WINE OF THE WEEK: Le Bonheur Prima 2008

Le Bonheur's flagship, the Bordeaux blend Prima.

This past week an outstanding Bordeaux blend, a delightful white blend and 25 chenin blancs, all enjoyed with excellent food, reminded me of a quote in Alexis Lichine’s New Encyclopedia of Wine & Spirits: “A fine meal ... is a delight in itself; add a glass of wine – gleaming red or translucent greenish gold – and delectation will be doubled”.

WYN VAN DIE WEEK: PK Morkel Pinotage 2010

'n PK Morkel Pinotage soos hierdie een het my smaakkliere vandeesweek oorweldig.
