Wine is a journey, NOT a destination.

Have you been bitten by the travel bug? While every glass of wine is a journey, wine travel will deliver your wine experiences to new heights.

Where to stop in San Jose and Santa Cruz when it’s wine o’clock in California

Vineyards in Santa Cruz, California.

California is home to many renowned wine regions, some well-equipped to handle tourists, others less so. For some regions it’s a question of terrain, for others location, but that shouldn’t keep intrepid travelers from making an extra effort to visit these regions—particularly when they produce world class wines like those of the Santa Cruz Mountains, writes Gregory Dal Piaz.

Four interesting travel destinations for wine lovers

The roads less traveled!

The eighth season of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope has given me the opportunity to discover some destinations I’ve never visited and new sides to places I’ve known, writes the author. This season’s fifteen new PBS episodes (grand total 106 now) span the globe from Asia to Europe and have offered me the chance to sample some novel tastes. Since I am always in search of genuine and authentic cultural experiences, in the course of my travels I’ve tried many things – from fish sperm and fried crickets to kava and taro whiskey. The truth is it doesn’t really matter what you experience, it’s who you experience it with that counts.

‘Haste makes waste’ in the West Coast Wine Region

Country food and country wine, a la Cape West Coast. Life's good!

Wine, like food and most other good things in life, should not be hurried, whether you’re making it or whether you’re just enjoying it. Time is nobody’s friend, especially in today’s rat race society of instant this and instant that, but when one visits the winelands, one should take time to not only enjoy the fine wines and food on offer, but also the beautiful scenery.

Underrated wine travel: North Carolina

Grandfather Vineyard & Winery in North Carolina.

Let’s take a trip back in time. Close your eyes and imagine yourself an English explorer, a shipmate of Sir Walter Raleigh’s, writes Kevin Chandler. You've just braved the Atlantic crossing and are rowing to shore towards a strange island on a forbidding coast. Yet immediately on landing, you see a very familiar site: grapes. Lots of them.

Coastal North Carolina at that time was teeming with native grapes -- big, plump muscadines cultivated by local Native Americans. The first permanent settlers would also grow these grapes, and today Roanoke Island remains home to The Mother Vine, a 400+ year-old gnarled vine occupying nearly an acre of land and believed to be the oldest cultivated vine in the New World. A tourist attraction, to be sure.

Five ‘eno-tourism’ destinations

Vineyards in the stunningly beautiful Bordeaux wine region.

We often write about travel destinations, particularly those that are wine related, says Gregory Dal Piaz. Today, I present you with some thoughts on the subject and some of the likely destinations that will enchant us all. These are some of the top eno-tourism destinations of the world.
