Five ‘eno-tourism’ destinations

Vineyards in the stunningly beautiful Bordeaux wine region.

We often write about travel destinations, particularly those that are wine related, says Gregory Dal Piaz. Today, I present you with some thoughts on the subject and some of the likely destinations that will enchant us all. These are some of the top eno-tourism destinations of the world.

Wine in Spain and Portugal: A tale of two rivers

A tale of two rivers, that's the story of wine in Spain and Portugal.

Spain is an enchanted destination for all types of travelers, writes Craig Donofrio. There are castles from the Middle Ages, celebrated works of contemporary architecture, rustic tapas and Michelin-rated restaurants. There is world-class surfing, skiing in the Sierra Nevada, cycling for all skill levels, and a wealth of cultural activities that are unique to the Iberian Peninsula.

Murcia, Spain: Exploring the land of Monastrell

Th Murcia region of Spain.

I was one of eight lucky wine writers chosen to explore three of Murcia, Spain's incredibly unique Denomination of Origins (DOs); Yecla, Jumilla and Bullas, writes Julia Crowley.  More impressive than I could have ever imagined, this area has outstanding wine, unmatched beauty in both the city and rural areas, seriously savory foods and welcoming, friendly people.  It was truly the trip of a lifetime, spent exploring a region and its wines that I previously had very little knowledge about.

Five great wine destinations to visit

The winelands make great destinations ... EVERYWHERE!

I’m very fortunate in that my work involves travel, writes Gregory Dal Piaz. Well, that’s not the fortunate part, the fortunate part is that my work involves travel to places that are conducive to growing vines. Those happen to be some pretty spectacular places. However, the longer I do this the more difficult it becomes to reconcile where I want to visit with where I have to visit, not that I am complaining!

Take a tour of the villages of the remarkable Côte De Beaune wine region of France

The Cote de Beaune in France.

The Côte de Beaune produces an array of whites and reds thanks to soils that are less homogenous than in the Côte de Nuits, writes Christy Canterbury MW. More reds are made than whites and they show more immediate appeal than their Côte de Nuits cousins - Pommard excepted. The whites, however, take top honors. Here’s why:

1. Chardonnay grows better in these lighter, higher limestone content soils. Pinot Noir prefers some clay and silt, too.

2. Valleys make incisions into the hills, meaning more rain and wind assail the vines. Sturdier Chardonnay handles this better than thin-skinned Pinot.

3. The slopes are gentler, making the wrong exposition unforgiving for sun-seeking Pinot Noir.

A guide to America’s Willamette Valley wine country

The Willamette wine valley in Oregon.

The northern portion of Oregon’s Willamette Valley is only an hour’s drive from Portland, the state’s largest city, but the 5,200 square mile swatch of wine country seems a world apart in its unhurried, scenic way, writes LeeAnn Neal.

The Willamette Valley offers a great deal more than wine, boasting acres of commercial cereal grain and grass seed crops, orchards and vegetable gardens. It’s common for travelers to encounter roadside stands offering fresh fruits and vegetables for sale as well as u-pick berry patches.
